Deep South Growlers

Posted by

Even though this is a taproom and growler filling station and not a brewery, I still wanted to write about my friends at Deep South Growlers since I spend so much time there and they put up with me. They are certainly a regular stop on my ‘Brewery Adventures’ – and many times – more than once a week.

This is a family owned and operated business that has 2 locations – One at 6900 Lenox Village Dr, #6, Nashville, TN and the other at 1602 West Northfield Blvd, Murfreesboro, TN. I visit the Lenox Village location more often because it’s very close to where I live (I can literally walk there and stumble home) but I’ve been to the Murfreesboro store several times as well. Steve and I try to make a “Murfreesboro Brewery Run” a couple of times a year and the DSG Murfreesboro location is always on that list.

Both locations offer their own uniqueness: Lenox Village for instance has a pretty large fenced in patio area that is great for bringing your dog so they can hang out with you while you’re drinking beer. Murfreesboro has an additional private room, that holds 10-12 people, with sliding barn doors and can be rented out or utilized with a minimum tab, for any occasion. Both taprooms are very inviting with plenty of seating between the bar area and additional tables. The staff is always very friendly, knowledgeable, inviting, attentive and engaging.

The Beer

DSG is set up perfectly for the way I like to drink beer. I prefer to have a new beer every time I drink one and DSG allows me to do that more often than other places. The Lenox Village location has 28 taps and the Murfreesboro location has 24 that rarely duplicate each other. They always have a great selection, as they are constantly rotating in new beers as they sell out of others. When I see they’ve added a new beer to their menu that I haven’t had, I try to get there as soon as I can to get it – especially when Abbey checks one into Untappd knowing that I haven’t had it yet. (She knows what she’s doing 🙂 )

Each location has their own beer menus that are uniquely different from each other. Abbey (along with Greg, Cindy and Alex) does most of the selecting and buying for Lenox Village while Alex (along with Greg, Cindy and Abbey) does most of it for Murfreesboro, they do a fantastic job in always having a great and varying selection while aligning those selections with the changing seasons.

Not only are these locations great places to hang out and drink beer with your friends but they actually fill Growlers (it’s in the name) from their taps that you can take home and drink later. Just bring in your personal growler (up to 64oz) and pick which beer you want to take home and it’s poured directly from the tap into your growler.

IPA’s are always a staple on their menus as well as Pilsners, Lagers, Stouts and Porters. Also Sours, Wheat beers, Pumpkins and currently you’ll find Oktoberfest, since it is that time of year. The Lenox location currently has a Pumpkin IPA on draft and it’s amazingly good.

Because the beers rotate in and out constantly, I won’t list their menus on here, but if you follow them on Untappd at the links below, you can always see their updated menus.

Non-Beers

“What if I don’t like beer?, you might ask (first of all – HOW DARE YOU!). I’m kidding of course, but for those who don’t like beer or maybe you’re the DD, they have several other options to choose from. They keep 3-4 Ciders on draft all of the time that rotate in and out regularly, they also have Hard Seltzers in a can that can be drank on premises and sometimes on draft, as well as Kombucha in cans and on draft on occasion. For the DD they sometimes have a Non-Alcoholic option – currently Lenox Village has an Italian Pilsner by Untitled Art.

For the most up to date menus for Beer, Cider, Hard Seltzer and Kombucha for each location, check out their Untappd links below:

The Atmosphere

As I mentioned before, both locations are very friendly and inviting. To me, they are the local neighborhood beer establishment, where there are a lot of regulars and everyone knows your name. I can walk into Lenox Village anytime and see familiar faces and strike up a conversation with people I know. I feel like Murfreesboro has that same vibe where a lot of locals frequent and know each other.

With that being said, it’s not JUST visited by locals, I hear a lot of new people come in all the time as I hear them say “this is my first time here” and “what do you recommend?”, which is typically replied to with “what do you normally like to drink?” or “do you want to try a sample?”

There aren’t a lot of places you can go where the staff has the knowledge to be able to help you find something you’ll like, let alone take the time to do it.

Here is a perfect example of the atmosphere I’m trying to describe:

I was at DSG Lenox Village about 2 months ago and we had one of our infamous TN evening thunderstorms with heavy rains and winds and it knocked out power in the entire neighborhood. The lights went out and the emergency lights came on inside and Abbey and Greg kept right on pouring beer for the bar that was pretty full. On top of that people started playing music on their phones and the entire bar started loudly singing together along with the songs and it was a pretty cool scene to be a part of. Everyone was making the best of the situation and Abbey and Greg kept it rolling. We left before they closed but Abbey told me later that they stayed about until around 11PM after they finally ran out of glasses. I’m sure most places would have closed after losing power, but this is a testament to the kind of people they are and how they run their business.

In addition to what I mentioned above, both locations have 3 TV’s that always have some game or sporting event on. You’re likely to find the Titans game on when they’re playing and college football on during the season. Also, since they are Preds verified they will always have the Nashville Predators on for home and away games.

Events and Other Stuff

As if you needed any more reasons to visit DSG, I’m going to give you some anyway. On 9/4/23 they started a weekly Happy Hour from Monday -Friday 4PM-6PM with $1.00 off all 16oz pints at both locations. They also have regular Tap Takeovers – with Sierra Nevada, Jackalope and Bearded Iris all coming up in September. Also, slated for 9/21/23 at Lenox Village, is the 2nd Beer School Meeting which discusses different beer styles, led by a local beer distributor. I attended the first one and found it very interesting.

Check out their website below that shows the most accurate dates, times and locations for their upcoming events.

Although they don’t have food themselves – you’re welcome to bring food in from the outside and eat it there. There are plenty of local restaurants nearby that you can pick up from or have delivered to the store.

Summary

Deep South Growlers is one of my favorite places to drink beer and hangout in Nashville and Murfreesboro. With their variety of beer styles and breweries, the laid-back atmosphere and friendly people, it makes them one of the best overall places to visit. I often meet various friends out there and the initial text to them simply reads “growlers?” Some of those friends I originally met at DSG.

If you haven’t been to DSG, and you like craft beer, you’re missing out. Put them on your list of places to visit. If you have been, then you know what I’m talking about and make sure to get back and visit them. Say hello to Abbey, Alex, Greg and Cindy when you see them!

Cheers!

Scott
